The Tempest is a play by William Shakespeare which was written in 1610-11 and it was believed to be his final work before retirement. The Tempest is a play based on a group of sailors who shipwrecked on an island. On the island, they chance upon Prospero and Miranda. Prospero was the duke of Milan before being exiled there. Miranda fell in love with one of the sailors, while the other sailors plan to take over the throne of Naples and still others plan with Caliban, Prospero’s monstrous servant to kill Prospero.

Through magic, virtue and young love, these plans are thwarted. The ship is repaired, and Prospero is restored to his rightful place as duke of Milan.

This rendition of The Tempest was directed by Braham Murray, who also directed other plays such as The Merchant of Venice, Midsummer Night’s Dream and Charley’s Aunt. This play stars Julie Wee as Miranda, Simon Robson as Prospero, Timothy Wan as Ferdinand and many more capable actors.

What really stood out to me from the play was the cast’s performance. Though the play consisted mainly of caucasian actors, the local actors did a marvellous job maintaining the accent, which pulled off the shakespearean vibe. This stood out to me as it takes a lot of effort to maintain an accent that one is not familiar with, yet despite that, the actors made it sound convincing and really brought out the shakespearean vibe.

The other thing that stood out to me was the choreography, which was really well done. The choreographer kept the choreography dedicated to the right era which didn’t digress too far from the play’s timeline.

The only thing i found odd about the play was the very short appearance of a child towards the end of the play. I felt that the child should not be included considering the length of his appearance. It could have been that I didn’t fathom too much of the storyline, but that’s how i felt.

All in all, The Tempest by Braham Murray was a good work. Definitely worth a shot for other people that are wondering.
